ARC received for honest review.

Ugh. I’m sad to see this series end. But if you’re going to end, go big. The final installment in the Searching For series focuses on Isabella (Izzy) MacKenzie, a young woman who looks to drugs, alcohol, and random hookups to soothe the restlessness that seems to creep up on her. When she chooses the “pretty boy” standing against the wall at a college party, she never expected to feel so “kinnected” to someone. But her demons come out and she chose drugs over the handsome man that would haunt her for years.
Liam Devine was a cop, doing his job, and still thinking about the one night stand six years ago. When his partner convinces him to try Kinnections Matchmaking, little did he know that beauty from six years ago would be there to help him. When they meet again, the chemistry is still there and he will do what he can to make Izzy his. Unfortunately, Izzy’s past deems her unsuitable for him. But he won’t give up.
I fell in love with Izzy and Liam’s story. The power of a person to come from nearly dying from drugs to finding love and realizing they deserve it is inspiring. Not all addicts are bad people. The strength is something most of us should be powered with. As a parent of an addict, I like that the heroine was shown to be strong but still vulnerable.
I’m sad to see the Kinnections group go, but thought the ending of it was perfect. Thank you Jennifer Probst for bringing us these stories.

Book Spotlight ☆ Love Me, I Dare You! (Hell Yeah) by Sable Hunter

love-me-i-dare-you-1Love Me, I Dare You! (Hell Yeah) by Sable Hunter

Joshua Long, World Champion Cowboy, is known wide and far as the ‘cowgirl whisperer’. His looks are fallen-angel handsome and his talents in the bedroom are legendary. Josh prides himself on being able to give a woman sheet-clawing, back-arching, toe-curling multiple orgasms. But at the peak of his career, Josh loses it all when his knee is shattered by a one-ton bull and his reputation is shredded by a scorned woman.

After investing blood, sweat, and years into the rodeo, he has lost his career and the lucrative sponsorships that went with it. Returning to his hometown of Kerrville, a place he hasn’t always felt welcome, Josh is uncertain of the direction his life will take. But sometimes fate is kind and the lifeline that we need to hang onto our hopes and dreams appears just within our grasp. Josh has such a moment when he walks into Isaac McCoy’s HARDBODIES bar. There, surrounded by old friends who offer him a second chance, Josh’s gaze lands on a beautiful, blue-eyed redhead who draws him like a moth to a flame.

Emma Zachary has lived life on a dare. There is nothing she won’t try, she grabs onto happiness with both hands, embracing every moment of joy she can find. Unwilling to accept the hand that life has dealt her, Emma refuses to let her blindness hold her back. She intends to make all of her dreams come true, especially the ones that include a certain cowboy who seems to always be there when she needs him. Emma longs to know what it’s like to be loved, so she takes a dare and bids on a date with rodeo Romeo, Josh Long. What she discovers is that one night in Josh’s arms will never be enough.

Josh is tired of his reputation. He wants to be more than his father’s son; he wants to be more than just a buckle-bunnies fantasy man. Joshua wants a woman who sees him for who he really is, failures and all, and loves him anyway.

Emma is tired of being alone. She needs someone who will look beyond her faults and want her in spite of the challenge she faces.

Their journey together is filled with laughter, tears, danger, and sex hot enough to set the Hill Country of Texas on fire. Join Emma and Josh as they learn the true meaning of love.

I dare you.

Josh frowned. She had a weird sense of humor. “I never know what you’re going to do or say. One minute you’re dancing on the bar and the next you’re feeding me.”

“Hey, the man dared me. Plus, I believe in the barter system – trading something you have of value for something someone else has that you want. The dance earned me the right to milk a cow for the first time. Last week I sang with the band on a dare and earned myself a ride on a Segway. The week before that I helped a guy train his dog for some fresh vegetables.”

He shook his head, then realized she couldn’t see him doing it. “You’re something else. I wish I had something to trade so you’d cook for me every once in a while.”

They did say the way to a man’s heart was through his stomach, but Emma wasn’t under any illusions that she stood a chance of winning his heart or even catching his attention. He’d been kind to her and she wanted to be kind to him. “You don’t have to trade anything, I love to cook and I always cook too much. I can have a plate waiting for you any night you say.”

Josh was taken aback, watching her fill another mug from the tap. Instead of putting her finger over the edge to monitor how close to full it was, she seemed to be testing the weight.

“I don’t know…”

He didn’t get to finish before Isaac’s voice sounded over the loudspeaker. “It’s time, ladies.”

“Oh, no.” Josh said. “Here we go. I guess I’d better go get into position.”

“Oh, you’ll do great.” Emma encouraged him as he went to join the other men. He might do fine, but she didn’t know about herself. She hated the idea of another woman gaining his attention. Which was stupid. From what she’d learned, women flocked to Josh in droves.

Isaac continued. “To my left, lined up against the wall and ready to parade in front of the bar are a dozen…count ‘em…a dozen of Kerrville’s…”

There was a slight pause and Emma wondered what was happening, but in the next heartbeat Avery started speaking.

“Give me that microphone, Badass. Only a woman can do this special moment justice.”

Isaac barked out a laugh and there was the distinct noise of a kiss being shared.

“As my handsome husband was saying, we have a dozen of Kerrville’s handsomest hunks ready to strut their stuff for you. Noah McCoy, my smart brother-in-law will be in charge of the money and my sister-in-law, Jessie, is going to be our auctioneer. The rules are simple, raise your hand, wait to be called upon and give your bid. Jessie will give you all the information on each gentleman so you can make an…shall we say…informed decision. “Avery ended her speech with a flourish. “So…if our band would give us some Chippendale-worthy background music, we’ll begin.”

At her cue, the band cranked up and a countrified burlesque tune filled the air. Emma would’ve given her eyeteeth and a year or two off of her life to have been able to see what was going on.

Josh would’ve given his eyeteeth and left nut to be anywhere else. He was last in line, bringing up the rear on a pair of crutches. His knee wasn’t paining him too much, but he was beginning to itch a little. As he scanned the crowd, he felt like he was looking at a school of toothy hungry sharks. There was no question he liked women, and hooking up with them was a joy he never wanted to give up. Right now, however, he sorta felt like bait.

One thing he never gave up was control. He might not be a Dom like Isaac, but he needed to be in charge. As the seconds passed and the first poor schmuck was introduced and the bidding began, he felt that much cherished control begin to slip through his fingers.

“Second up, ladies, for you ogling enjoyment is Denver Bolden. He’s a sexy cowboy who works at Tebow. Just imagine him going for a ride without a shirt. Denver has made plans for dinner and dancing on one of the most romantic rooftop clubs in downtown Austin.”

The women tittered and Josh moaned. The guy in front of him snickered and punched the man ahead of him, pointing to the bevy of women who were sending obvious sexual signals their way.

At the bar, Doris walked up to Emma. “I swear I have never seen so many good-looking men in such a small place before.”

Emma sighed. “Care to give me a running commentary?”

“Ha!” Doris laughed. “That I can do. Well…” As the music played and the money flew, Doris kept Emma entertained with a blow by blow description of every man who was put on the auction block. “You ought to see this one, Emma. Oh, my land-sakes-a-Goshen, his muscles have muscles.”

“Yes, ladies, up next is Canyon Brady. His plans for an evening together is a hot-air balloon ride over Lake Travis and a romantic evening at a Tuscan vineyard. He is our town blacksmith and lord-have-mercy he’s built like one. Wouldn’t you just love to see him glistening with sweat after swinging a big hammer…”

At Jessie’s description, Emma burst out laughing. She might not be able to witness this spectacle with her eyes, but her imagination was working overtime.

“I don’t know about you, but I need something cold to drink. I seem to be getting a little overheated,” Doris confided as she slipped both of them a beer. “Here, on me.”

“Thanks.” Emma took a swig, listening as the bidding went well over a thousand dollars. “I wonder if he’s going to be worth the price.”

“I don’t know,” Doris whispered, “but I sure would love to shake him down to see.”

“Who’s next?” Emma asked, not wanting to just come out and inquire about Josh. Earlier, she’d entertained the idea of putting in a bid herself. After some debate, she’d talked herself out of it. Dare or no dare, she hated to think her first date would be one she had to buy.

“I don’t know his name, girl, but he is red hot.”

“Our next bachelor is Devon Lancaster, another Tebow cowboy. And don’t tell my husband I told you this.” Jessie winked at Jacob who was sitting at a table right in front of her. “But I have seen this man use a rope. And ladies…you are going to beg him to tie you to the bedposts. He’s offering an evening of dancing on 6th Street and dinner on a riverboat sailing down Lake Austin.”

“Oh, my goodness!” Emma giggled. “Jessie is as bad as Avery. What is it about these McCoy women?”

“I can tell you what it is.” Doris leaned in to confide. “They’re all rode hard and put up well-satisfied, that’s what.”

Emma blushed at the thought. After Devon went for twelve hundred, Emma was trying to mentally calculate how many were left. “Was that the last one?”

“No, Mr. Rodeo Romeo himself is coming this way. You ought to see him, Emma. Josh Long is dressed in all-black. The man is fallen angel handsome. His shoulders are wide, his eyes are dreamy and if you don’t bid on him, I will.”

Inside of her chest, her heart was beating a rat-a-tat rhythm, her palms were sweating and Emma felt like she might jump out of her skin. Just the thought of spending time with a man like Josh made her dizzy.

“Now, the man you’ve all been waiting for ladies…” Jessie’s voice rang out. “Mr. Joshua Long, cowboy extraordinaire. The date he’s planned is a romantic one, watching the sunset together, then a horseback ride in the moonlight and a picnic on our own Guadalupe River. Doesn’t that sound amazing?”

Before Jessie even called for bids, a multitude of voices rose, shouting numbers at Jessie. “Order, order please.” She banged the little gavel in her hand and looked toward her husband for help. Josh watched all of this, his mood varying between fascination at the array of females all clamoring to be with him and a slight feeling of panic. “Lord have mercy,” he whispered.

Emma was very conscious that he was standing right in front of her about to step up for his turn.

“You’re about to twist that dishrag in two,” Doris quipped under her breath.

“Sorry.” She laid it down.

“Step-up, Joshua Long and let the women get a good look at you.” Jessie directed to the squeals of the crowd.

“Bid, Emma!” Doris elbowed her to Emma’s chagrin.

Josh heard the bar manager addressing Emma. “That’s right, Miss Emma, save me,” he whispered loudly.

“A thousand!” one voice cried out.

“Twelve hundred!” another yelled.

“Fifteen hundred!” came yet another bid from the back.

Jessie was repeating the bids, the numbers piling higher and higher.

“Eighteen hundred!” A woman enthusiastically screamed while standing on a chair. Josh’s eyes widened, amazed at the frenzy.

“Eighteen hundred!” Jessie repeated.

“Nineteen hundred!”

“Two thousand!”

Another voice rang out. “Twenty-two hundred from me and my twin. We want a ménage!”

Josh coughed, choking down a laugh as he caught Isaac’s eye who was watching the process with amusement.

“All right!” Jessie cheered enthusiastically. “Twenty-two hundred? Any more bids? Going once…going twice…”

Emma was on her tiptoes, every nerve straining. She knew Josh had been teasing, but a feeling was rising within her that this was it – this was her chance. Josh Long was the first man that she’d ever felt a connection to, a drawing, like maybe when he looked at her, he saw more than just a blind woman. Yea, it was a lot of money, but for a good cause. People might suspect she was buying a date because she couldn’t get one otherwise. But what the heck, there was one thing she’d learned in her life, if you didn’t go after what you wanted, you didn’t have a chance in hell of getting it.

Do it, Emma, I dare you.

Emma smiled. She didn’t know if that thought had originated in her heart or in her mind – all she knew was that she was going for it.

Doing a quick mental review of her bank account, she took a deep breath and shouted.

“Two thousand five hundred!”

“Sold!” Jessie declared with a quick strike of her gavel. “Miss Emmalyn Zachary just bought herself a man!”

But will they be able to?

“I have unusual hearing. I had to strain a little, but it was nice listening to you.”

“Careful, Caleb.” She giggled. “I think you just gave me a compliment.”

He almost got that closed-up look on his face again. Almost.

“I can say nice things when the moment arises.”

“Yes, you can.” In fact, his compliment made her feel positively giddy. “And thank you very much.” Then something he said clicked in her brain. “Have you been listening to my other music?”

He dropped his gaze to his plate. “I might have downloaded a track or two,” he mumbled.

“Why, Caleb Branam. Thank you so much. I’m flattered.”

“Yeah, well, don’t let it go to your head.” He bit into his hamburger, killing any further exchange of words.

Jasmine swallowed her smile and dug into her hamburger. By the time they finished eating and he’d had one beer to her two, she was a little mellow but still excited. She could feel it in her blood. These songs were good. Maybe the best she’d ever done. She couldn’t wait until they hit the studio tomorrow and she heard the guys play the tunes.

On the way home, she leaned back in her seat, closed her eyes, and hummed the tune she’d just finished that afternoon. She couldn’t wait to get into rehearsals tomorrow. She was so busy thinking about it all she didn’t realize they’d pulled into her driveway until the truck stopped.

“Oh!” She opened her eyes. “We’re here.”

“Yep. Have nice snooze?”

“I wasn’t sleeping,” she denied. “I was just imagining my music.”

“Okay. Let’s imagine it inside.”

In the house, she dropped her keys on the counter, put her purse next to them, and whirled around with her arms in the air. She was just so jazzed, just as she always was when she completed new songs. She wished she could soar through the air. She paid little attention to her actions until she lost her balance and stumbled into Caleb. He wrapped his arms around her to catch her, and every pulse point in her body began to thunder like a herd of elephants.

Jasmine wrapped her arms around his neck to balance herself and found herself staring into dark eyes that seemed to see right inside her. He cupped his palm to her head to hold it steady and pressed his mouth to hers. His lips were cool and firm, yet, at the contact, heat flooded her body. The tip of his tongue traced the closed seam of her mouth, and when he added pressure, she opened for him without thinking.

And practically detonated right there. His tongue scorched the inside of her mouth, coaxing her own tongue to dance with his. Everything faded away, leaving only the two of them and a kiss that trumped any she had ever had in her life. It went on and on, stealing her breath and making her nipples harden and her pussy tingle. She held on for dear life as the world spun around her.

Then, with the same suddenness, he broke the contact and lowered her to her feet. She stared at him through glazed eyes, trying to make her brain function again.

“What is the right word.” He took two steps back, putting distance between them. “I’m sorry. That was a mistake”

Jasmine licked her lips, the taste of him still lingering there as she struggled to get her breathing under control. “It didn’t feel like a mistake to me.”

Shut up, Jasmine. You know it was a mistake. Wrong guy, wrong time.

“Trust me, it is.” He had rearranged his features into his perfected expressionless mask again.

“Listen,” he interrupted. “There is no but. I haven’t kissed anyone in more than a year, and this is not the place to start.” He took another step backward. “This can’t happen. We have a business arrangement requiring my entire focus. And the last thing I need in my life is some kind of entanglement here.”

Deeply sensual stories of romance and adventure, they will capture your imagination and your heart. History is definitely worth repeating.

Thrust from his home, Austin McCoy travels west to build a new life for himself in the wilds of Texas. While difficult, carving out an existence amidst these dangers is not what weighs heavily on his heart. With nothing and no one to share his days, Austin is lost. The answer to his prayers comes from a very unexpected source…

Jolie Dumas has also been torn from the only home she has ever known. “Come on, Sandy. Time to lock the door and call it a night.” Austin McCoy urged his dog to join him inside. “We’ve had a hard day. Time to rest.”

The big hound stepped over the threshold, making for the hearth and flopping down in his usual spot.

“We made good headway today. I think we’ve cleared another acre, soon we’ll have enough room for a few more cows.”

Sandy’s only response was to roll over.

“Are you hungry? I’ll hang this pot of stew over the fire to warm it. Tomorrow, I think maybe we’ll put some corn in the coals to roast.”

Austin’s voice rang in the empty space. Taking off his hat, he chunked it on the table. Yes, he was going crazy. The only live creature he had to talk to was his dog and Sandy was a poor conversationalist. He sank down in a ladder back chair with a cowhide bottom and let his gaze rove around the small log cabin he’d built with his own two hands. “Home, sweet home.” The simple dogtrot structure was made from pine logs he’d cut and stripped of their bark. After he’d peeled them smooth, he’d notched the logs on the corners, then set them together, filling the cracks with a mixture of red clay and pine straw. This humble abode was nowhere near as fancy as the home he’d left in Tennessee, but Austin was no longer welcome in his family home. After his mother died, his father had remarried. When his young wife’s wandering eye had fallen on Austin, his father quickly decided it was time for his only son to venture west and make his own fortune. Stephen McCoy had given Austin his inheritance early, wishing him well and sending him on his way.

The lure of adventure was strong and the prospect of his own land in the rich territory of Texas had been some consolation for walking off and leaving everything he’d ever known and held familiar. Now, six months since he’d broken ground six miles south of the spot the Indians called Red Mound, he was fast beginning to regret the decision. Hard work and the dangers he encountered daily were not the cause of Austin’s deep depression. No, it was the isolation. The loneliness. The complete and utter void that seemed to surround him, made Austin want to throw his fists in the air and rail at the heavens. What he wouldn’t give for someone to talk to, someone to hold at night–someone to love.

Austin longed for a wife.

How many nights had he lain alone in his bed and ached for release? He’d not been with many women, but since becoming a man he’d not gone so long without feeling the sweet relief that only a woman could give. And what scared him more than anything, was that there was no end in sight to this exile. Months and years of loneliness stretched before him. How would he endure it? Where would he find a wife in this wilderness? He’d made the long journey to Nacogdoches, only to find women as scarce a commodity as silk. And if there was one, he was no prize. His mind returned to his home in Tennessee, the women he’d courted, the plans he’d made. All of that was gone. What did he have to offer a lady?

Only love, only to be cherished.

Running a frustrated hand through his long hair, he stood up in disgust. “No use wishing for something I can’t have, is there boy?”

Feeling rested enough to feed his hunger pains, Austin hung the cast-iron pot on the hook over the flames. While he was there, he stoked the fire and added another log. Sandy raised up and cocked his ear. “Did you hear something outside?” Austin grew still to listen also. He heard howling in the distance, but nothing out of the ordinary. “Just that big old timber wolf and his pack, nothing unusual.” Sandy lifted his nose to take a whiff, giving Austin a long look from his limpid brown eyes.

“You want to check it out?”

Just voicing the question gave them both a jolt of energy. The dog and man both rose to head for the door. Austin picked up his rifle, just to be on the safe side. “Let’s go see what we can find.”

…In the small lean-to, full of tools, Jolie nestled down in the straw. She was scared and hungry, but at least she had shelter of a sort, enough to give her a chance at a few hours of sleep. The scratches on her body made her feel raw and achy. As she closed her eyes, the sorrow in her heart knew no bounds. With no food, no money, and nowhere to go, Jolie didn’t think she would make it. She’d tried to find some berries to eat, to no avail. The only sustenance to be found was the raw turnip she held in her hands, which she would attempt to eat as soon as she rested enough to have the energy. As she laid her head against the rough wood, Jolie tried to reason with herself about all that happened. What had she done to deserve this? Was she less than her Aunt Lisette or Grandmother Dora? Was she not a human being like they were?

Jolie hugged herself and tried to reason the mystery of slavery. All that her Grandmere and mother had told her, the whispers that she’d heard from Eula and her papa, all the things that she’d seen while at Oak Hill came back to her. The tiny cabins the workers had lived in, how they lined up for water and food to be doled out to them, the men who guarded them on horseback with dogs at their sides–all of the things that she’d chosen to ignore and not see. If she didn’t acknowledge the injustice, it wasn’t real. Closing her weary eyes, she knew there would be no more avoiding the travesty. The nightmare had become her reality.

…Sandy took off ahead, his nose to the ground. Austin followed closely, his rifle loaded and ready. Not too many days ago, he’d seen a panther. He had no wish to kill the big black cat, but it could take down one of his oxen, not to mention a full grown man. Austin cocked his ear toward the area where the three head of cattle were penned. There was no unrest, so he didn’t think there was a predator about. When they came even with the shed, Sandy veered over to nose around. The closer he came, the faster he walked, tail in the air. “What is it, boy?” Austin asked. “Something there?” He figured it was an armadillo or a possum, hopefully not a skunk. The last run-in the mutt had with a skunk, Austin had dipped him in the creek four times, scrubbing him with lye soap until they both could tolerate the stench.

With only the light of the moon to guide him, Austin drew closer to the shed where Sandy was now nosing his way past the door that had somehow been left ajar. Hearing the dog’s whimper, his curiosity rose to a high level. His animal wasn’t reacting the way he would expect if there was prey or some type of threat. No, Austin was confused to see Sandy’s tail begin to wag. “What have you found?”

Coming close, he pulled the door open a bit wider so the moon’s rays could filter into the near darkness. “What?” he whispered. At first he thought the intruder was a man. The hat pulled down over the face and the jacket obscured his view, but the long hair and bare legs sticking out from what appeared to be a dress of some kind convinced him otherwise. He blinked once or twice. Were his eyes deceiving him? Perhaps this was some kind of cruel joke that his mind was playing on him. This was a woman. Going to his knees, he knelt by the small trespasser. “Ma’am? Are you all right?” He shook her shoulder gently.

The touch jerked Jolie awake. All she could think was that Coffi or the bear had her. A scream erupted from her lips before her eyes focused on the face in front of her.

The sudden noise caused Sandy to bark. Austin sat back on his hills, giving the girl a little space. “It’s okay, I’m not going to hurt you.”

Before, Jolie would never have thought to fight for herself, but after what she’d been through, having been sold into slavery, defending herself had become second nature. But without a weapon or light enough to see her surroundings, all she could think about was running. Jumping to her feet, she tried to figure out a way to get past the big man who blocked her way. “Please, just let me go. I’ll leave. I promise.”

Leave? He took in her tattered clothing and bare feet. She was so small. “You don’t have to leave. Come into the cabin where it’s safe. Aren’t you hungry?”

The turnip she’d taken from his garden still lay at her feet. “Yes.” Could she risk it? There was the possibility this man could hurt her, but what choice did she have? “If you’ll let me rest for a little while, I’ll be on my way soon.”

Austin didn’t know what to think. “Are you alone? Where did you come from? Those questions and more were racing through his mind. He rose and offered her his hand. “The ground’s rough. Do you want me to carry you?”

Jolie would’ve laughed if she’d felt more confident. “No. I’ll be fine. I’ve walked a long way already.”

He couldn’t fathom what she was saying. Knowing what lay beyond his small clearing, Austin was flabbergasted to find this tiny female seeming to be at the mercy of the world. “Please, come in and let me check your feet and get you something to eat. Sandy and I were just about to have supper. Somehow, he knew you were out here.”

“He did?” Jolie laid her hand on the big dog’s head. “He’s soft.” The memory of the vicious dogs used on the plantation to keep the slaves in line caused her to jerk her hand back. “He won’t bite me?”

“No, he won’t bite.” Austin was anxious to get his guest inside. “We’re glad to have some company, aren’t we, Sandy?”

His dog answered with a bark, which made Jolie smile. “Okay, for a little while.”

As Austin led his guest back to the cabin, he tried to make her feel more comfortable. “My name is Austin McCoy. What’s yours?”

“Jolie.” She answered automatically, then immediately regretted it. Would her buyer look for her? Did he know her name? She really had no way of knowing one way or the other.

“Jolie.” Austin said it, savoring the way her name sounded on his lips. “That’s a beautiful name. Where are your folks? Were you attacked by Indians?” The thought of her just barely escaping with her life made his blood run cold.

“We were attacked. My parents are dead.” Both of those things were true, albeit unrelated.

“I’m so sorry.”

When he opened the door to the cabin, the smell of food caused her to sway. She hadn’t realized how weak she’d become.

Austin shot out a hand to stabilize her. “How long since you’ve eaten.”

“A couple of days.” She tried to remember. Coffi hadn’t really cared whether the women had eaten or not.

As soon as he got Jolie inside, Austin began to do everything he could do to make her welcome. “Here, sit here.” He gave her the more comfortable chair, a rocker that sat next to the fireplace. “And water, let me get you some water.” Moving to the bucket of well-water he kept on the small cabinet in what passed for his kitchen, Austin ladled a cup full and carried it to her.

Taking the water, she gratefully took a drink. “Thank you.” It tasted so good, she greedily drank it all.

“I’ll get you more.” He hastily refilled the cup, then found a bowl to dip up some of the stew. “This is rabbit, but I’ve added some potatoes and onions I raised in the garden. I think it’s edible.”

“You’re very kind.” Jolie sat the cup on the floor and raised her hands to grasp the clay dish with the tin spoon.

“My pleasure,” Austin said and he meant it. Even by the light of the kerosene lamp, he couldn’t make out her features. The hat cast a shadow over her face, but from what he could see of her neck and arms they were covered with mud and numerous scratches. “I think I’ve got an herb salve that might make those sore places on your face and arms feel better.”

Jolie heard him, she just couldn’t stop eating long enough to answer.

Raised a lady, she managed not to shovel the food between her lips–just barely.

It did Austin’s heart good to watch her eat, but he couldn’t stop worrying about what would happen to her if she left again. “Where will you go? Do you have relatives?”

Swallowing the last delicious bite, she licked her lips, then hung her head. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do.” Just the thought of trying to find a place to live, some way of making a living, was more than she could comprehend.

Austin wanted to offer help. He wanted to do something. Noticing again her tattered clothing, he spoke quickly. “Do you have any other clothes?” He hadn’t seen any type of satchel, but she might have left it at the lean-to.

Jolie glanced down at the rag she wore. “No, I must look a mess.” What could she say? “I ran to get away.”

He nodded. “I’m sure you were terrified. Would you like to wash up and change? I could pour up some water for you.”

Cleaning herself sounded like heaven. “Please, yes. But I have nothing else to wear.”

“I’m sure I can find something.” He rose to find her anything of his that would come close to fitting. “A shirt, I’ll find a shirt for you. As small as you are, the length will be almost like a gown.”

As Jolie sat there by the fire, her belly full, with a dog at her feet, she was transfixed by the big man with the long honey blond hair moving around the room, doing his best to make her comfortable. As she waited, she trembled. Residual shock from all she’d endured still echoed throughout her body.

“Jolie, you can come and clean up.” He snapped his finger. “Sandy, get up. We shall wait outside. When you finish, we’ll return.”

He gave her a kind smile, then left her alone. As soon as he was gone, she glanced around. After Oak Hill and even the bungalow, his home was simple and barren. But for the first time in weeks, she felt safe. Taking the rag he’d given her to use, she dipped it in the lukewarm water and began to clean the mud and blood from her body.

Outside, Austin leaned against the side of his cabin, flummoxed by all that had happened. How different this evening had turned out to be than the one he’d envisioned. For a little while, he was no longer alone. When a smile played upon his lips, his selfish feelings shamed Austin. How could he take pleasure when this woman had suffered so much loss?

Standing in the darkness, he kept an eye on Sandy who explored a few feet away. “Don’t go far, boy.” Austin was aware of the dangers that lurked in the darkness. The knowledge that Jolie had been exposed to those same dangers and soon would be again caused a shudder to rip through him. How could he let her return to the wilderness? The very idea was intolerable. He’d have to accompany her to a settlement, see that she was safely delivered to…his mind clamored for answer. Perhaps the Spanish mission in Nacogdoches could offer her sanctuary until she could find someone or…

“Mr. McCoy, Austin? You can come back in now.”

Her soft voice broke into his thoughts. “Very well.”

“Sandy.” He called his companion and they reentered the cabin. Aware she had changed into his clothing, he cautiously let his gaze move up her body, starting at her small feet, which were now clean from the mud that had been caked on them. By the time his eyes climbed to her face, Austin was speechless. He’d never seen a more beautiful woman. Her skin was the color of gardenias, and her eyes were a purplish blue that reminded him of a delphinium flower that had grown in his mother’s garden. The hat was gone and now he could see she had dark hair which fell to the middle of her back in long, loose curls…and her lips, her lips were the color of a pomegranate. Her beauty almost brought him to his knees.

Author Spotlight ✽ Hell Yeah!: The Song Of Her Sighs by Lana K. Dempsey

perf5.000x8.000.inddHell Yeah!: The Song Of Her Sighs

Sex, Secrets, and Second Chances…

Rodney Regent works hard running the family ranch, and it shows in every rock-hard muscle on his body. Known for his jaw-dropping smile, he has captured the hearts of women, young and old,
all over the small Texas town he calls home. Rodney is single and loving it, until he sees a photograph that grabs his heart and won’t let go. As his luck would have it, the one woman he has always wanted is engaged to someone else. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t forget her.
Then the news comes that Joseph and Cady McCoy will visit Regent Ranch. The change they bring with them includes more than just Cady’s magic touch, it brings the woman of Rodney’s dreams to his doorstep.

Blog Page Break 2

Lola Maie woke to Rodney moving fast out of bed. “Get dressed. Someone’s outside.” His voice was low and firm. It was no doubt a command, which she followed immediately trusting him completely.

A multitude of lights moved across the long windows lining his bedroom. People were outside. A lot of them.

Then she heard it.

It was a low thumping, something she felt in her sternum before it registered in her ears. Lola Maie’s eyes went wide as she recognized the rapidly growing sound of a helicopter.

Rodney pulled on a pair of jeans laying over chair. In the moving shadows of flashlights racing back and forth, he looked enormous. His broad shoulders, silhouetted against the shocking white of the helicopters eye, seemed six feet wide. Rushing toward her, he all but lifted her off her feet, tucking the bed sheet around her as he swept her towards a small door. “I want you to get in this closet and lock the door. It’s a panic room. Under the carpet in the left corner is everything you’ll need. You don’t open this door until I tell you and not before.”

Lola Maie just stared at him.

“You hear me? Promise me. Right now, say it!”

“I promise.” She breathed.

Then he shoved her inside and slammed the door. “I want to hear it click Lola Maie!” He yelled through the metal door. The command in his voice brooked no argument and with a shaking hand she reached out and turned the deadbolt. After such a warm night of intimacy, having the cold hard door between them felt deeply wrong.

“Good. Now wait for me, baby. I’ll be back”

Lola Maie’s heart squeezed listening as the thunder of his steps became more and more faint as he ran. Until finally there was silence. It was the worst sound she’d ever heard.

                                             About Lana K. Dempsey

I’m Lana, a life-long Texan, dog lover, and writer of sensual romance. When I say ‘sensual romance’ I mean I include real life in my stories, and real life includes sex.

I divide my time between Austin Texas and a small family ranch not far from Shiner. Shiner is the home of Shiner beer; I’ve been known to stop off at their tasting room before rolling up my sleeves to get to work on the ranch. Like many Texans I’ve got a bit of everything in me, German, Native American, and some Creole influence. Nothing like a little spice to liven things up.

Writing is much like reading, I need to feel the story in the same way a reader would. I adore leading men who are strong, but aren’t afraid to love. My goal is to fall in love as I write, it’s the only way my reader will as well.

Come with me and get to know a hot cowboy or two. It’ll be fun!

New Release + 5 Star ARC Reviews ☆☆☆☆☆ Sharing Rylee by D. Kelly

five gold starsReviewed by Jacqui

ARC received for an honest review
This latest book from D. Kelly is an absolute must read. The story is about an unconventional love between Rylee, Pete, and Nick. The characters are from Chasing Cassidy and reading it will help with the following of the story.
Rylee Stafford has always known she wanted a happily ever after, but not in the traditional way. Eight years of therapy have helped Rylee to understand what she wants and that it is all okay. The hard part for her is to see if others will understand her way.
Enter Nick and Pete. Nick has been in love with Rylee for as long as he can remember. Best friends with her brother Zack, he is willing to wait for Rylee to decide if he is what she wants. Pete is another friend that Rylee hooked up with at Zack and Cassidy’s wedding. He also is in love with Rylee and wants to continue their relationship. Rylee is in love with both men and wants them both. But Nick and Pete have a plan also.
This is an amazing story of the power of love. When you love as deeply as D. Kelly has written in Sharing Rylee, there are no obstacles in your way. This book is so well written that the complicated love story between these three seems normal. I cheered for Rylee in her coming to the realization she no longer has to hide. She could face her fears and get through this as a stronger person.
Well done D. Kelly!! I am in love with this story and everything about it. One of the best books I have read this year. Thanks for the chance to read it early.

Once again D. Kelly has sent me on an emotional roller coaster. This book is a must read.  The characters will suck you into their world so you can see their story with them. I love how bits and pieces of them are released a little bit at a time. This book is beautifully written, the saucy parts are hot and steamy. The main story line of the book keeps you intrigued so much so you may not want to put the book down ever.

Rylee, is a strong willed girl just trying to find herself self and her place in the world. She knows what she wants and what she needs to get it, but can’t seem to bring her-self to open the door to make her dreams come true. Nick knows what Rylee needs and is willing to give her anything she wants; after all he gave her his heart in high school, he just can’t figure out why he’s not enough. When Pete re-appears into Nick’s life and whisks Rylee away for a few nights of fun under the sheets, Nick can hardly stand it.  Nick wants more, Pete wants more and Rylee has friend zoned them both. How can you fall in love with 2 people and not break anyone’s heart.

Blog Page Break 2

Do happily ever after’s always have to be so traditional?
Rylee Stafford has asked herself this question since she was eighteen years old. Now, at twenty-eight she still doesn’t have an answer. One thing she knows for sure is even if she can have the unconventional relationship she’s always dreamed of, it would never fly with her family. Her sexual proclivities would never be accepted by them or their social circle.
The truth is Rylee is tired of hiding her feelings. Tired of wanting what she can’t have and so tired of feeling abnormal because she wants a different kind of love.
She’s kept her secret well hidden, especially from Nick, her on again off again love affair. Her secret isn’t their only stumbling block, though—Rylee’s also met someone new. His name is Pete and he sets her heart and soul on fire; he’s sexy, smart, possessive, and he wants her. No matter how much she cares for them she can’t bring herself to tell them the truth. The only way to Rylee’s heart is to have a relationship with both men. It’s only when Rylee takes her annual vacation does she finally realize her happiness is worth more than what anyone thinks of her. Now the only question is: will Rylee’s alternate lifestyle alienate everyone she loves? Or will she be accepted for the person she’s always been deep down inside?

Blog Page Break 2Excerpt

“Nick, I think you should go.”

I feel like she punched me in the gut, but I’m going to take Zack’s lead on this one. He never let Cassidy pull too far away, and I’m not going to let Rylee shut me out now.

Silently, I get dressed. She’s still standing by the bathroom with her arms across her chest. She doesn’t want to get close to me because she doesn’t want to admit her feelings for me.

“Rylee,” I say, walking toward her at a slow pace. She eyes me up and down and presses herself as close to the wall as possible. She’s not getting away from me.

I pull her into my arms and crush my lips to hers. My hand weaves into her sexy, just-fucked hair, and I pull her tightly to my lips. I kiss her with all the passion I’ve had building inside of me for years and she feels it. I know she does because she hasn’t stopped whimpering the entire time her tongue has been dueling with mine. When I finally slow the kiss, she whimpers even more, and when I slowly pull away, her fingers go immediately to her lips as if she’s trying to savor the magic we just shared.

“I’ll go for now, Ry, but not for long. I’m going to check in on you every day, but I’ll give you space and stay away. Don’t take too long because I want you now more than ever, Rylee. I always have and I always will.”

I place a soft kiss to her forehead and leave.

New Release + 5 Star ARC Review ✽ Lasting Lyric (The Downtown Series #4)by TJ West

Lasting Lyric (The Downtown Series Book 4) T.J West

ARC received for an honest review

Oh T.J. West you have done it again in your Downtown Series. This time with Slim and Lyric. I fell in love with these characters. Two people who started out as friends, or in this case band member and manager, who decided that resisting what they have is pointless. Who better to fall in love with than your best friend who kicks your ass at video games?!

Slim McQuaid is the guitar player for JINKS. Easy going and happy he forms a strong friendship with their new manager Lyric Newton-Crow that has him wanting more. After the bus accident that sent Lyric to the hospital and away from Slim for months he is ready to show her that he wants more than just the friendship.

Lyric is the daughter of famous parents and siblings. Never getting the acting bug she takes a job as JINKS manager and follows her dreams of the music industry. Her dreams also lead her to Slim. His easy going demeanor and ability to lose gracefully at video games sparks her interest. But she is his manager. Nothing can happen. Or so she thinks.
Once again TJ West weaves us a sizzling tale of a sexy rocker and the woman who loves him. Filled with the type of steamy scenes and storytelling you love from the author, this book will not disappoint. This is one of my favorite rocker series. Add to that the covers create an image for you when you read, what is not to like?! So once again TJ West, thank you for giving me the chance to read the next installment of the Downtown Series. Rock on sista friend!!

***Warning- Not intended for those under 18 years. Extreme language and sex.  ***This book is part of a series- book 4.

It was a spark neither one of us saw coming…

It was a love neither one of us expected…

It’s a competition of wit and intelligence.  Our attraction undeniable and our chemistry magnetic.  Very much different in our upbringings, so naturally the odds would be stacked against any kind of romance.

I’m the rock star and she’s every bit the good girl.  We respect each other, but push each other’s buttons.  Our friendship is unconventional, but something inside of me tells me that Lyric is my perfect fit.

It only takes one moment to change everything, one moment to turn my whole world upside down.  What happens when you fall in love with your best friend?  Are you prepared to handle the emotions?

She’ll be the lyric I can’t shake…

She giggles again. “Night, Hot Stuff.”

“G’night, Charlie.” I may have said goodnight, but my body is not ready for it. My fingers itch to get a feel of her belly, her skin. It’s all so fucking wrong, though. Why hadn’t I ever felt this way for her before? Why now? Why are my eyes suddenly wide open for the very first time? How did I not see her before the accident? I want things to go back to the way they were. I don’t want to have these feelings for her…I just can’t help it, though. I need to feel her. A need that is so wrong, yet feels so right. Very slowly, I inch the tips of my fingers to the edge of her cami. I pause. I don’t want her getting the wrong idea, even though it is the wrong idea. One finger. Two fingers, then three. The rest follow suit and trickle their way a little up her cami. Lyric flinches and her body stiffens. I stop. “Sorry,” I mumble. “My fingers cold?”

“No,” she whispers out. “Why are you touching me there?”

Crap, she hates it. She doesn’t want this. I give her my best answer, anyways. “You’re soft.”

“Can’t sleep if you keep tickling me.”

Tickling. I bite back a laugh and proceed gliding my fingers across her belly. Holy fuck, her body is soft as hell. I fucking love it. “Tickles, huh?”

“Yes.” I can tell she is trying hard not to laugh. She’s very squirmy and it’s making my cock hard. Hope she can’t feel it. “Stop it.”

“Okay,” I chuckle. “Night again.”

She sighs, “Night.”

“Is it okay if I just keep it there? I promise, no tickling.”

“Fine,” she groans, and I bet she has a smile on her face, along with an eye roll.

I can’t stop skimming her belly and flirting with her. “It’s, like, really soft.”

She snaps, “Slim!”

My body shakes with silent laughter. “Yeah, I’m done. Go to sleep.”

“That’s what I’m trying to do.”

“Sorry,” I chuckle.

My hand stays planted on her belly, and I hope that tomorrow night we’ll be able to do this again, and maybe…just maybe, I’ll inch further up her cami and hit my jackpot. My flirtation is going to test our relationship, but will Lyric decide she’ll want to flirt back and possibly take our friendship to the next level? Only one way to find out.

Author Interview

Tell us a little about yourself and your background:

I’m originally from NS, Canada later moving to LA where I now live with my kids and husband. I’m a huge hockey fan, love the water, and have the biggest obsession with Ketchup chips. I can hear you all gaging now, but trust me these things will put me in my grave, but it will be so worth it. J

What inspired you to write your first book?

What inspired me to write my first book, was I heard a friend had written a book and something lite inside me. I thought “well I want to try.” So, I sat down in front of my computer and three years later here I am.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I think it would be Pop Goes the Wesel by James Patterson because it showed me that romance and suspense can blend well together.

How much truth is in your fiction.

It depends on which story, Darkness Series has the most truth to it. Broken would have about 60% and Blackstone has about 20%.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor and why?

That’s a hard question, it’s a tossup between James Patterson and Katy Evans. They each have left their mark with me. James Patterson for his creepy way of telling you a story that keeps you on your finger hooked on the next page so that you don’t have to lose a beat. Katy Evans, because she can write one hell of a twisted sexy screw-up male lead. Remington Tate will always be in my top 5 beloved alpha characters.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I weave several story lines together and drop clues throughout. It can be tricky linking them together or forgetting to link them…it happens but thankfully I have a whole team who works with me so eventually the loose ends get found!

Do you have any strange writing habits?

I need music to loop in the background as I write, or listen to rain on an app I have. Really, it just depends on the mood I’m trying to create. Other than that I just write until I’m done.

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning?

Names are strange for me. I am always googling them, I tend to go for the shorter ones, I like four to five letters. It’s just an odd cork of mine. Savi, Cole, Seth, Emily, Mark, Mia, Lexi etc…They don’t have to have meanings, more of just what suits how I see them physically. I am an extremely visual author. I see each scene as if I was directing a movie. Right down to the music, background, lighting, and smells.

Are you a plotter or a pantster?

I’m a total pantster, I can’t do story boards. I get an idea and just start to write. Where it goes is what the story must be. It can change about 150 times but that’s okay because it was meant to be.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

I would say my Broken Trilogy has been my greatest accomplishment. That story came to me in a dream and I had to put my other series on hold because Savannah’s story was screaming at me. Best decision ever.

Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?

Hmm, a few months ago I would have answered this question differently. However, now that I am writing this mc series I’m not sure if I have any boundaries anymore.:/ I will never torture an animal in any of my books, Adler is safe and sound with a family member (Darkness Series).

What is your least favorite part of the publishing / writing process?

Passionate scenes are a bit of a struggle for me. I can do “intense passion” but “slow/sweet passionate scenes” I get a little antsy on. Cole Logan, helped me get through Broken. For whatever Cole opened a new door for me. Still, not my comfort though.

Is there a certain type of scene that’s harder for you to write than others? Love? Action? Racy?

Least favorite part of writing would be editing or when you have boxed yourself into a corner. Then realize that you will have to remove the scene and start over again. I write fast and hate to stop and go back to what needs to be re-written.

What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?

My advice, just keep writing. Take breaks when you need them, there’s no shame in taking a month break, sometimes your head just needs it. Sit on the story when you’re done, tuck it away, wait a month and go back over it. You’d be surprised what you missed. Get a great editor. Invest a few hundred $250-$800 it may sound like a lot but it’s your hard earned work with your name on it.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I see myself sitting in front of my lap top working on a fifteen book series. I’d love to write a story that last over “their” life time. Time will tell.

Just some fun questions

Characters often find themselves in situations they aren’t sure they can get themselves out of. When was the last time you found yourself in a situation that was hard to get out of and what did you do?

I honestly can’t recall a real life situation that I got myself into that “I” actually got myself out of. However, I did get myself and my friends into a positional situation in Vegas and thankfully my friends came to the rescue by being aware and reading the “signs” I didn’t see. …I leave you with that.

Does your significant other recognize his moves in your writing?

Oh Lord…yes *tugs on collar* and not just in the romantic scenes… *cough* Seth Connors personality.

What literary character is most like you?

Savannah Miller. Her feistiness.

What secret talents do you have?

I used to act in theater and film back in Canada…not sure if that was a talent lol

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love the water so anytime we get the chance we head out to Parker, AZ and spend as much time as we can on the Colorado River.

Honor (Blackstone Series #1)

Bullets fly during a dangerous mission, and Major Mark Lopez is critically injured…

A Blackstone soldier, Mark is transferred to the North Dakota hospital with the security clearance to treat members of the elite covert team. The pretty new nurse assigned to his case knows her stuff, but Mark soon discovers she knows more than just how to save lives. Mia Harper knows the Blackstone Code.

Mia is a bit of gypsy and doesn’t engage much with people—but there’s something about her mysterious new patient…

After Mark recovers from surgery, he is discharged from the hospital with orders to rest. Not that he does. Instead he rushes to México for the team’s next assignment. But when he returns to the hospital again and again with minor—and not so minor—injuries, Mia suspects he’s only coming to see her. Romance ignites, and because Mia signed a non-disclosure agreement at the hospital, Mark is able to open up more with Mia than any other woman.

Some debts demand payment in either cash or blood…

When someone from Mark’s past comes to him for help, old secrets start to resurface, and more blood is shed. Worlds collide and lies are exposed in an all-or-nothing underground poker game.

Mark must put his life on the line to keep Mia safe…and to finally learn the answer to the question that’s haunted him his whole life.

What really happened that night twenty-five years ago?

My name is Savannah Miller.

My father is the mayor of New York. One day after my twenty-seventh birthday I was grabbed from behind. A cloth sack was quickly pulled over my head, and I was taken from everything I’d ever known.
I was beaten, starved, treated like an animal, and forced to live in a room with no windows. With no sense of time and no dignity left I finally gave up hope and made a promise to myself to end it all. Unfortunately, it was going to be a slow process.

Then one night an elite group of US Army soldiers came to my rescue. I was brought to a safe house and given two options:

One—Stay under their protection and follow their rules or…
Two—Leave and be guaranteed to be returned to the savages within a week.

I chose option one.

As I work with a therapist and begin processing my hellish ordeal things slowly begin to surface. With the help of new friends and a potential new love I fight to get my life back and make choices that will forever alter my future.

This is my story…

After witnessing the murder of her lover and the heartbreaking loss of their unborn child, Savannah wants to end it all.

Then she is given a second chance at love. Sadly, even when life hands you second chances it doesn’t always follow that things will work out the way you want them to.

Some lies can just be too painful to move on from. What’s worse than being Broken? Being shattered…

Savannah takes control…

Tired of all the lies and deception, Savannah Miller must learn to face life on her own. As she seeks to find out who she really is, she still is still burdened with the fallout from past traumas that left her broken.

Her fragile hold on her new life slowly gives her the confidence to move ahead. What she really needs is right in front of her—Cole Logan is patiently waiting for the right moment to prove his love. But her past isn’t finished with her yet…

Are Savannah’s strength and Cole’s love enough to vanquish the shadows, or will those who mean them harm succeed in preventing the mending of their shattered souls?

Emily McPhee has struggled to overcome her father’s death…It’s not easy, but Emily finally has the life she wants. She’s an A student at Orange University and has a comfortable home and a great circle of friends. She’s also in love with handsome Orange PD officer Seth Connors. He doesn’t seem to return her feelings, though, so she tells herself his friendship is enough.

Jimmy Lasko is a psychopath, and Emily is his greatest obsession…Lasko knows what he wants—what he deserves—and has the deadly skills and unending patience to get it. What he wants is Emily, and he is watching and waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. That time is coming soon; he’ll make sure of it. A sense of unease settles on Emily, but is the danger real or imagined?

When Emily begins hearing noises and suspects someone has been in her house, Seth urges her to get a roommate. But after a search, she realizes a certain attractive cop would be the perfect choice, and Seth moves in.

Seth loves Emily, but fears his feelings might make it difficult to protect her. In all areas of his life, Seth sees himself as a protector. He’s determined to keep Emily safe, but he pushes the captivating blonde away in an attempt to stay objective. However, after her stalker makes a failed attempt to capture her, Seth can no longer deny his feelings.

With help from Seth’s police colleagues, he and Emily set out to identify the person hunting her before it’s too late. But is it worth the risk to bait the trap with what he wants most?

Emily McPhee is in the clutches of a monster… Despite the protection of her boyfriend Seth Connors and his colleagues with the Orange Police Department, Emily is imprisoned in a basement by her psychopathic stalker Jimmy Lasko. His bizarre behavior adds to her terror, and a video link forces Seth to witness her captivity, leaving him feeling helpless as he, the OPD, and the FBI search for her.

Freedom isn’t free, and safety is just an illusion…Though Emily escapes the basement, the threat is far from eliminated. In fact, things she learned while being held by Lasko lead her to believe he isn’t working alone. Lasko is still out there, determined to get her back, and crazier than ever. If he does have a partner, Emily has no idea where the threat might lie or who she can trust.

More than a year after her ordeal, Emily McPhee finally feels safe…Emily’s psychological scars are healing. Things are great between her and OPD Officer Seth Connors, and her biggest problem is the X-rated Halloween decorations her best friend Pete has placed all around her house.

If only it would stay that way… Seth senses something isn’t right, but he doesn’t know where the danger is coming from…or why. He’s sure Emily’s neighbor, Travis McKay, is hiding something, and the man pays way too much attention to Emily.

To make things even more complicated, a new female officer appears to have her sights set on Seth, and fellow officer Alexander Avery has some sort of connection to a mysterious brothel employee. Seth has a feeling all these odd things are somehow connected—but he knows he’s missing a huge piece of the puzzle.
